Meiyyazhagi - Tamil Movie Review
Meiyyazhagi

Meiyyazhagi, a young woman, wants to take care of her disabled brother Deva, which makes marriage a difficult proposition. Meanwhile, the village's big shot lusts after her and plots to marry her at all costs...

The problem with Meiyyazhagi is that it is 30 years too late. It is a well-intentioned and an over earnest film about a sister who sacrifices her life to take care of her disabled brother. This is not just 'been there done that' but something that has been explored in different angles and exceptionally, and all by one man — K Balachander. It is a tough task, to beat his troika of the films — Arangetram, Aval Oru Thodarkathai and Manadhil urudhi Vendum — in which the daughter has to make sacrifices and take care of her family.

Still, to director RT Jayavel's credit, he manages to tell his tale in an uncomplicated manner, with a little help from Jai Quehaeni, who, in the titular role, manages to hold the story together, though it isn't a first-rate performance by any stretch. But the filmmaking is rudimen

tary and screams mega serial melodrama, which brings us to the question — where is the audience for this type of films?
